“Princess Aiko, the only child of Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako, and a second-grader at Gakushuin Primary School has been reluctant to attend school since Monday after being ‘‘treated harshly’’ by boys in her grade, an official of the Imperial Household Agency said Friday. The 8-year-old princess has been complaining of strong anxiety and stomachache, said Issei Nomura, the top aide to the crown prince and princess. Nomura, grand master of the crown prince’s household, told a regular news conference that the princess attended school Tuesday but left school early. She has since been absent from school.
Motomasa Higashisono, a senior director of the Gakushuin School Corporation that runs a range of schools from kindergarten to university, said the princess ‘‘got scared Tuesday when she went by a boy who dashed out of a classroom.”
This seems to be pretty big news in Japan right now. Even the Prime Minister has weighed in on it, saying that he hopes that the little princess recovers soon (which may or may not be likely if her mother is anything to go by). I’m telling you, it looks like all-out war in the Imperial Palace right now. Did you know that Prince Akishino (the younger brother of Naruhito) and his vastly popular wife Princess Kiko are breaking off long-held ties with Gakushuin school, by no longer sending their own children there? It caused a bit of a stir when it was reported a couple of months ago, and really made me think: just why are they doing that? Trying to distance themselves from little Aiko and her parents? What’s going on now? Juicier and juicier!
