Some of us have come a long way, baby

And some of us have come full circle.  At the start of this article, I was fully prepared to hate the woman who wrote it, who seemed to epitomise everything I detest about educated females (especially if they are young, white and American) who choose to live by the old male rules.  By the end of it however, I was filled with admiration for the way she got through her struggles, which were considerable, and was only sorry that her marriage didn’t survive the turmoil.  I still think that she could’ve tried harder to work things out with her husband, in light of the fact that they had dependent children and that apart from the fraud thing, he wasn’t such a bad bloke after all.  But I guess that’s what happens to women who get a taste of (financial) freedom.  Once they’ve had it, there’s no going back.  Here’s hoping her book does well, anyway!

Nice friends she had. There is something about this article that rubbed me wrong, but I haven’t pinpointed what it is. Maybe it’s the “life is so much better now” hum. Methinks she doth protest too much.

This “trials are a great privilege” stance made me grind my teeth.

No, lady, they are not, on a scale as described they are a disaster!

Exactly so, Petra. As one of the country singing stars said (a woman, can’t remember if it was Dolly Parton or Loretta Lynn), “Money can’t buy happiness; poverty can’t buy anything.”

Well, the game isn’t over yet. She may not have much now (by the standards of her former life as a “kept woman”) but she seems determined to get it together by herself, and for the sake of her kids. I say good for her! Now that’s really coming a long way.
