Not my problem, but …

A couple of years ago I went to a Halloween costume party, where I became acquainted with a somewhat creepy 40-ish gaijin guy from Canada.  He was tall and well-dressed and seemed nice enough, but I didn’t like him.  What creeped me out most was that he kept coming up and patting my bunny ears and calling me a “cute little girl!”  I didn’t like that at all.

What I also didn’t like was that he was rumoured to be dating teenagers, but I figured it was none of my business.  Gaijin males live by different moral standards here in Japan, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.  What’s it to me?

Anyway, I forgot all about him until the other day, when I met his latest girlfriend by chance at JJs (she’s really sweet btw, 24 and looks 10 years younger!), and discovered that he has moved in with her and her 4-year-old daughter.  She really loves him – he treats her so much nicer than any Japanese man ever would – and has high hopes of marrying and living happily ever after.  I have no idea what his plans are, but I must say that hearing stuff like this makes me realise that Japan is a pervert’s paradise all right!

(Also, it makes me realise that some women are really stupid.)

Just, yewwww. Are there laws regarding “age of consent” in Japan? In the US, if a guy older than 17 has sex with a girl younger than 17, it is considered statutory rape, even if it was consensual. It has led to some unfortunate indictments and convictions, but for the most part, it’s a good law. It at least may stop some men from preying on young girls.

From what I’ve heard, the age of consent varies from prefecture to prefecture, and is as low as 13 in some of them.

Good god. Thirteen is way too low, although I will admit that some 13 year old girls appear to be sexually precocious. I still think the law needs to be in place, and 17 is probably a good cut off age.

Yes, that explains why kiddie porn is technically legal here.

Karen, in some states in the US marriage licenses can be granted to girls as young as 13 – especially if the “bride” is pregnant.

This has always blown my mind and I have not yet found out how this works: the happy couple gets married and then the groom toddles off to jail? Or is marriage so sacred that the child molestation is forgiven?

Do you know more about how this is handled?

“Or is marriage so sacred that the child molestation is forgiven?” Based upon my own observations of marriage in NZ and other lands, I would have to say that this is true, although not quite in the way you mean.

I don’t know about laws in other states, but I’m guessing it depends on the age of the “groom”. If he’s under 17 as well, then it’s not considered statutory rape anyway. It’s just considered stupid. If he is over 17, then, yes, he probably does go to jail.

Thanks, Karen, for shedding some light on this matter.
