I’ve just been reading a heartwarming tale of an 80-year-old widower who found love on the Internet. It reminded me of a story that I heard some time ago, right here in Kobe. A man in his early seventies arrived from the UK to do research for a book. He enjoyed life in Japan, but was very lonely, so somebody suggested that he put an ad in the local lonely hearts column (this was in the days before the interweb). To his great surprise, he got several responses, almost all from much younger women, and chose to meet up with one of them, a 28-year-old office worker. The two of them hit it off immediately, and eventually moved to England together. I thought this story was lovely! But I’ve often wondered if they ever had children. Actually, I also wonder if he’s still around now.
